Bridges Broken, Voices Unspoken: Confronting Racial Bullying in our School System

Oxford School Board looks on as parents and community members prepare for their statements.

A Call for Change: Unmasking Ongoing Racial Bullying in Our School System
In a recent account, a distressed parent shares the harrowing experience of her daughter facing racial bullying. Despite community awareness, reminiscent of the 'peanut butter that could kill' saga, it's disheartening to see that parental persistence is still required to instigate any action.

The mother recounts instances of her daughter being dehumanized with monkey comparisons and racially insensitive sounds made by fellow students. Shockingly, there has been a lack of response. Emails from concerned community members have flooded in, echoing the mother's call for assistance, yet the school board remains silent. You can hear her testimony at the BOE here.
Revealing a concerning lack of transparency, a meeting between parents and staff unfolded, announcing a reopening of the investigation—news unbeknownst to the affected parents. Sadly, this isn't an isolated incident; a similar case in 2018 exemplifies a pattern of racial bias in school policies.

Adding to the puzzle, an email about MLK Day slips in the re-establishment of the DEI committee, raising questions about its initial dismantling. These revelations fuel the urgency for change, prompting Community Catalysts to take a stand against racial discrimination. Their commitment is clear: every child deserves a welcoming school environment, and any form of racism, whether subtle microaggressions or blatant acts, will not be tolerated. These revelations underscore the urgent need for change, highlighting the critical importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion instruction, in educational institutions.
Recognizing the gaps in the current system, Community Catalysts takes a proactive stance. We are advocating for a more inclusive bullying policy that explicitly addresses microaggressions, racism, and various forms of discrimination omitted from the student handbook. Our mission is clear: every child deserves a welcoming safe school environment, and DEI education is paramount in fostering a culture of respect and understanding.
